Website Background

Black On White Or White On Black – Which Website Background?

So you have decided to enter the internet world and build out a site. First, congratulations! It is a great industry and market to be part of. Design is a big element of a website. It’s the first thing a viewer will notice when they land on your site. One of the first decisions you will encounter when designing your site is what color background to use? Black, white or maybe even color? Well this is a very important aspect of the design. It’s the base from which all other colors you wish to use on your site will be used. If for example your logo is primarily black then using a black background would not be the wisest choice. Also if you wish to use a black font then again no black background. There are a number of questions to ask yourself and don’t rush into any one answer.

Black On White Or White On Black – Which Website Background? When you think about this, you need to ask yourself two things and here is what we suggest.

What is the most common background?

The most common background you will probably find is white. White is very easy to use, many colors will work against white, including black, which is not actually considered a color. Black is the absence of color. But just because everyone else is jumping on the white background bandwagon does not mean you have to as well. Really take a look at you target demographic, if your audience is a heavy metal or “Goth” audience certainly white would not be your best choice. Check out some other sites that are aiming at your demographic and see what they are doing. If you are starting an online poker site then black is also an option as a dark look and feel tends to be associate with that industry. If people are going to be staring at your site for extended periods of time, as is the case with online poker sites, then black is just easier on the eyes. You certainly don’t want people turning away from your site because their eyes hurt!

How does the background affect what I want to post on the site?

The background affects EVERYTHING you put on your site. Really analyze what you are going to “decorate” your site with and the colors of those items you wish to place on your site. If you have a bunch of white items or graphics then you almost have no choice but a black background so that all your graphics will be noticeable. For some folks your background may be chosen given the graphics you wish to place on your site. Talk to your designer and see what they have to say. Black is also considered to be “sexy” and “bad.” If you are targeting males then a black background would probably be the call. Also keep in mind that graphics can be changed as well. Do what you think is right. You know your business and you know your market, go with your gut instincts. Of course you can change it later but be ready for the additional costs to do that! Also you may need to do another “role out” of your site or another grand opening if you will. If you do change it down the road let your current visitors know your plans to change the site so they are not shocked when they see a new background.
