Web designing involves creating web pages and websites which are content rich. But the job does not end there; it also involves making those web pages or websites accessible to everyone through the World Wide Web. The latter is a very important aspect of web designing. Accessibility of a certain website means its appearance on all the major search engines like Yahoo!, Google and MSN, and also on the major Internet directories. Thus accessibility involves certain features, which figure in the processes of web designing.
Firstly, a semantic markup must be used that enhances the relevance and the quality of the web page. This basically implies that there should not be too big a gap between meaning (content) and presentation. That is, the actual message must be clearly put up, so that the document or the web page is relevant. Also, this implies that the web pages must be recognized on other web services as well well.
Secondly, all websites are written in a certain language or code which is called the markup language. This is usually HTML or Hyper Text. This consists of a certain set of codes or annotations to the text. The point is, a valid markup language must be used in writing the websites.
Thirdly, if there are any non text parts like multimedia or other graphics, a text alternative to them must always be provided.
Then, all hyperlinks which are inserted in the website must be relevant even when accessed out of context.
Avoid using too many frames and lastly, it is more convenient to use CSS tables than HTML tables for the structure and layout of the website. The page must be authored as well.
These are the principles of accessibility that a website must conform to, in order to be found easily on the web. The purpose of a website is to be a hub of information and instruction for people who are seeking it. Thus the entire point of using so much of money, and effort behind a website is lost if it can’t be located by the public. A website has to generate traffic, no matter what. So, it is useless to create a very graphics and content rich website which is visually appealing if there are no people to see it. The principles of Website accessibility are gradually transforming as the Content Management Systems is allowing changes to be made to web pages sans the need of having any technical know-how about programming, whatsoever.
